Mallee Environmental Employment Program (MEEP) 2008-09

Another big success!

Applications for the Mallee CMA’s drought employment program have now closed, after an overwhelming response from drought affected residents in the Victorian Mallee.

A total of 250 people successfully applied to be employed by the 2008-09 round of MEEP, which began in November 2008. This is the third time since 2006-07 that MEEP has been implemented by the Mallee CMA, with funding from the Victorian Government.

MEEP employs dryland farmers, irrigators and community members affected by the drought to undertake environmental works in the local region. Typical work projects carried out by MEEP crews include fencing, seed collection, road-side rubbish removal and irrigation channel maintenance.

People currently employed by the program will continue to work until June this year, when the program concludes.

MEEP - a drought employment program making a difference

In 2008-09 the Mallee CMA produced a document showcasing the Mallee Environmental Employment Program (MEEP) and the difference it was making to people in our region. This document included 11 case studies, supported by 10 digital stories (video interviews) where people were able to speak directly about what MEEP means to them.

The links below will take you to the 11 written case studies that clearly show where the Victorian Government funding for MEEP went and the difference it made to the hearts, minds and farming futures of many in the Victorian Mallee.
