The Living Murray: Mulcra Island

Mulcra Island EPBC Referral

A referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act) has been made by the Mallee CMA on behalf of the South Australian Water Corporation.

The proposed action for which the referral is made is the construction of Living Murray water management structures and associated works on Mulcra Island. Mulcra Island is located approximately 70kms west of Mildura and forms part of the Chowilla Floodplain including Lindsay-Mulcra-Wallpolla Islands icon site. A package of works has been developed and will be funded under the Murray Darling Basin Authority’s Living Murray Environmental Works and Measures Program. The proposed works will enable environmental water to be applied to over 600 ha of high value wetlands, creeks and broad floodplain areas. The application of this environmental water will provide a diversity of aquatic habitats for frogs, fish, turtles and birds to feed and breed, improve the health of red gum forests, remove fish barriers that currently exist on the island and restore productivity linkages between the Murray River and floodplain habitats.

South Australian Water Corporation is the referring party as they are the constructing authority appointed to the Chowilla Floodplain including Lindsay-Mulcra-Wallpolla Islands icon site.
