Waterwatch

Program Objectives

The Waterwatch Program aims to raise school and community awareness and understanding about water quality and catchment health issues across the whole of the Mallee region. The program also seeks to further community involvement in natural resource management.

At a state level, the Waterwatch Program is influenced by the Victorian River Health Strategy (2002). At a regional level, the program has links to the Mallee Regional Catchment Strategy, the Mallee River Health Strategy (2006), and local government stormwater management plans. Waterwatch in the Mallee region is set up on a catchment basis with two Waterwatch Facilitators.

Waterwatch

The Waterwatch Program in the Mallee region in 2006-07 aims to engage members of the community, through active school and community monitoring programs, to:

  • undertake quality control of data collection
  • evaluate the regional Waterwatch Program
  • integrate Waterwatch data into other waterways projects.

Waterwatch has strong partnerships with schools, community, landcare and agencies such as the Department of Primary Industries, urban and rural water authorities and local government.

The program is primarily implemented by Waterwatch staff in conjunction with other Mallee Catchment Management Authority projects and through the abovementioned partnerships (some of whom are financial sponsors of the program).
