A new resource for managing snails in the Mallee

A new online resource is now available for Mallee farmers to learn more about tackling snail infestations.

A short four minute video clip give farmers the chance to hear directly from entomologist Michael Nash and Yorke Peninsula farmer Graham Hayes, who both have extensive experiences in combating snail infestations.

“This video gives farmers, access to expert advice and strategies on how to deal with snails,” Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Chair Sharyon Peart said.

“Snails are becoming an increasing issue in the Victorian Mallee and can cause problems with contamination of crops and damage machinery.”

Michael Nash is a senior researcher with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and is currently working on the integrated pest management of snails and slugs in grain crops.

Graham Hayes has been fighting snails on his property for decades and shares his knowledge about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to managing snails.

The video was created by the South Australian Research and Development Institute from footage taken from the Cowangie Snail Field Day, which was supported by the Mallee CMA, together with the Murrayville Landcare Group, through funding from the Australian Government.

“The video is a great opportunity for landholders to hear from people who have been dealing with snails for many years, I encourage all farmers who have snails on their properties to take a look,” Ms Peart said.
