Are you a farmer who wants to be more tech savvy?

Mallee farmers have the chance to learn how mobile technology can help improve on-farm decision making and farming operations at a series of workshops being held across the region during the first week of February 2015.

The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) Land Management Extension Officer Jodie Price said farmers’ interest in this area is growing, with many now using their smart phones or tablets to assist with making on-ground production, business and environmental farming decisions.

“These workshops will help enhance farmers’ knowledge and understanding of how mobile technology can be used on the farm and also give participants the opportunity to share information and tips.

“The workshop will help participants get the most from their gadgets, and discuss how new modes of communication and various ‘apps’ can be used to develop efficiencies and support on-ground decision making.

“The Birchip Cropping Group’s Public Relations Officer Justine Severin has a background in journalism, specialising in agricultural issues. She will lead the discussion and share her experiences in smart devices/new electronic technology.

“CSIRO’s Research Officer  Steve Henry will introduce farmers to Mouse Alert, a new interactive website for farmers to record mouse activity and keep a close eye on mouse populations.”

Workshops run from 10am to 2.30pm at the following locations and lunch will be provided:

· Wednesday 4th February Lake Cullulleraine, Sporting Complex

· Thursday 5th February Ouyen Club, Pickering St, Ouyen

· Friday 6th February St Mary’s School Hall, Sea Lake

The workshops are part of the Environmental Management Action Planning (EMAP) program  delivered by DEDJTR and Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA), with funding from the Australian Government and the Victorian Government.
