Would you like the opportunity to have your say on the natural resource management in the Mallee?

Positions available for Land and Water Advisory Committee.

In a new approach to consulting with the wider Mallee communities, the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is now seeking community members from across the region to join the newly formed Land and Water Advisory Committee (LWAC).

The establishment of the LWAC is a revitalisation of the important communications required between the Mallee CMA and its diverse and widespread population.

The Mallee CMA has revised the existing structure and function of the two key advisory committees: the Mallee Lands and Mallee Environment and Irrigation Community Advisory Committees (CACs), to better align the respective roles and responsibilities of the committees to complement a new organisational structure at the authority.

As one regional entity, membership of the LWAC will be based on location rather than industry, which has been the process for the committees in previous years.

Mallee CMA Board Chairperson Sharyon Peart said the Land and Water Advisory Committee will play an essential role in ensuring the community is engaged and informed on natural resource management issues.

“Members of the committee will have a range of roles and responsibilities,” she said.

“They will provide community input and advice on current and future programs, projects and activities of the Mallee CMA and alert us to emerging issues of importance from a local viewpoint,” she said.

Applicants will be sought who have skills and/or knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Leadership; Land use planning; Communication skills; Community involvement; Local knowledge; Landcare; Cultural heritage; Business management; Farming; Natural resource management; Sustainable agriculture.

The successful applicants will be drawn from four distinct areas of the Mallee: North; South; East; and West, with at least three members recruited from each of the four areas. The committee will be supported by Mallee CMA staff and Board members and a meeting allowance is paid.

The LWAC will meet at least six times a year with meeting locations to be rotated around the region. Further meetings may occur to meet special needs or important issues that may arise.
