Trees for Mum event continues to grow

The annual Trees for Mum event is set to take place again this year and instead of the usual spot at Kings Billabong, trees will be planted at Psyche Pumps this Mothers Day.

The Trees for Mum program started as a small event in Sydney in 2002 and has now grown to a national occasion with participants right around Australia planting trees to celebrate their Mums on Mother’s Day.

Local event organiser Nardia Sherriff brought the event to Mildura in 2009 after approaching the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA), together with Mallee Landcare, to be involved and assist with planting trees at Kings Billabong.

This year, the Mallee CMA will coordinate the event at the Psyche Pumps site while Ms. Sherriff will be present at the Mothers Day classic at Nowingi Place to hand out trees for participants to plant on site or in their own backyard.

Ms. Sherriff said the support from the Mallee CMA was a tremendous boost for the event.

“It’s exciting to see this project continue to grow,” she said.

“I am thrilled the Mallee CMA and local Landcare groups are able to coordinate the event at Psyche Pumps so that people can still honour, remember and celebrate their mums.

“The Mallee CMA has supported this event since it began in Mildura by supplying trees, guards and stakes as well as tools and staff to ensure the trees were planted correctly,” she said.

Planting is free of charge and will take place from 9am until 3pm. Participants are encouraged to take along a picnic and enjoy the surrounds as balloons and signs lead the way from the Psyche Pumps pavilion.

Mallee CMA Board Chairperson Sharyon Peart said the Mallee CMA was proud to be involved with this event.

“This is a wonderful event to celebrate and remember our Mothers, especially for those who no longer have their Mum with them,” she said.

“We are proud to have been involved with this event from the beginning and now in its fourth year, it’s fantastic to see this event getting bigger and better each year,” she said.

In addition to the Mallee CMA and Landcare, Trees for Mum again has the support of Friends of the Kings Billabong who not only volunteer and assist on the day, but care for the trees after the event.
